Homework should be a meaningful experience, designed to develop independent work habits that will assist students during their school year. Students need to learn to organize their work and budget their time, both daily and long-range assignments. One important aspect of homework at this level is to instill in a student the idea that homework does not always have to be assigned by the teacher. Reading, practicing math concepts, studying spelling words, studying for tests, etc. all qualify as "homework".
Homework should be seen as a reinforcement of skills learned at school, a way of practice, as an opportunity to complete unfinished class assignments, and as a means of communication between the home and the school. The formation of proper homework and study skills is essential for success throughout a child’s academic career. Parent/guardian involvement with homework is an important key to that success. Students in fourth grade will have approximately 40 minutes of homework each night.
