Student Guide
As you approach graduation you may need letters of recommendation. Teachers are often very willing to prepare letters of recommendation for students; however, it takes a great deal of time and effort to write a personal, detailed, positive letter. You can make the task easier by compiling the following information and handing it to the teacher as you make your request.
MHS Letter of Recommendation Packet Requirements
- Resume, including:
- Your GPA (if over 3.0)
- Work Experience
- Activities (in and out of school)
- Student Information sheet
- Download the Student Information Sheet
- Fill out the information sheet completely.
- Teacher Recommendation Form from the employer, college, or scholarship to which you are applying
- Complete all the identifying information at the top of the form. Waive your right to see the recommendation; admissions officials may take recommendations more seriously if they know you will not see them.
- If there is no specific form, give your teacher all the other items in this list and explain that you have no specific form. If your employer or school included any information about recommendations in the materials they gave you, copy that information and give it to the teacher.
- An 8.5 x 11 envelope addressed for each employer, college, or scholarship with the correct postage. Write the deadline for receiving recommendations lightly in pencil on the front. The return address should be McFarland High School Counseling Office, 5101 Farwell Street, McFarland, WI 53558
REMEMBER:
- Submit to each teacher one complete packet that allows several weeks for deadlines
- You will want to include unique information on each Student Information sheet to keep your letters of recommendation from all sounding very similar.
- All recommendations written by MHS staff are confidential. Copies will not be available.
- A note of thanks should always be given to anyone who writes a letter of recommendation for you.
